Year 1Miss Johnson, Mrs Graham and Mrs Harbisher
Welcome to Year 1
REK and RAH consist of 38 children; our teachers are Miss Kyle and Miss Hopper and our higher learning teaching assistant is Mrs Fulton-Wren.
This half term, we are looking forward to learning all about our favourite stories written by the author, Julia Donaldson. We will be exploring a woodland theme, such as the Room on the Broom, Stick Man, the Gruffulo and the Gruffulo’s Child. We will be exploring Forest school further, through making magical potions, finding the Gruffulo and describing snowy, winter scenes.
Argh me hearties! Reception had a fantastic WOW afternoon, alongside parents. They sang, danced and performed a range of songs to celebrate the end of our Pirate/Under the Sea topic. The children enjoyed jelly and ice-cream at their pirate party then made a variety of crafts! Lots of fun was had by all!
This week, we have been practising counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10. We have used the Dienes equipment to count forwards and backwards in tens and we are beginning to partition 2-digit numbers!
We explored Forest school during the last week of term. We have lots of fun building dens, making pictures, reading stories and investigating our natural environment.
This week, Reception enjoyed warming up their muscles, stretching and learning new yoga moves! Look how flexible we are!
This week, Reception thoroughly enjoyed their “Mad about Mini-beasts” WOW week! They enjoyed making mud cakes, bumble bee and ladybird biscuits which they enjoyed with hot chocolate, after their adventure to Forest school! The children went on a bug hunt, exploring plants and Mini-beasts in the local area. They took part in a bug ball, dancing and singing a range of songs. To complete their brilliant week, they made their very own Mini-beast headband to wear during their celebration with parents and completed a range of creepy crawly crafts! Well done everyone!
Zoo lab visited Reception this week! The children were able to learn about a variety of weird and wonderful creatures. Some of the children were also very brave when handling these creatures. They were up close and personal with a Giant African land snail, Millipede, a Madagascar cockroach and a very hairy tarantula!
In Reception, the children had a brilliant day celebrating World Book Day! They enjoyed listening to some of their favourite stories and they even made puppets for a special show. They all looked fabulous in their costumes! Well done everyone!
We continued to celebrate Chinese New Year this week-check out what we’ve been doing!
We created our own lanterns, listened to the story of the Great Race, wrote our names using Chinese writing and we even had fun in the Chinese restaurant role-play area!
In maths this week, we were able to find doubles up to 10. We were able to select and count out the correct number of counters from a large group. The children were then able to place the same number of counters on each butterfly wing to find the total number. We were able to write the corresponding number sentence to match the representation. Well done everyone!
Kung Hei Fat Choy! We have been celebrating Chinese New Year by having a special feast! We learnt about more about Chinese traditions which are celebrated in China, sang songs and had a dragon dance to celebrate their special festival. Did you know Chinese New Year is also known as Spring festival?
This week, we learnt about the Northern lights and discussed the various countries in the Arctic circle. We explored using a range of paints, mixing colours and creating textures when creating our artwork.
What a wonderful surprise we had today when it snowed! Take a look at the fabulous photographs below.
