Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed their Wow Week! Some of the highlights were: doing orienteering in P.E., learning and performing a musical piece using tuned/untuned percussion and keyboards, painting the Northern Spire bridge, learning about the fabulous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completing the bridge building challenge!

The bridge building was linked to our learning in Science (forces) and our amazing visit to the new Northern Spire bridge on the River Wear. The children (alongside parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles!) had to try and make the strongest bridge possible from one piece of card, one piece of paper and some art straws. Also, it had to span 25cm and have a minimum deck width of 15cm. Unbelievably, some of the bridges were so strong that they held all of the metal weights we had available, which was 13.4 kg! It was a lot of fun and demonstrated just how much the children had learnt about how to add strength to a structure.

We would like to say a huge thankyou to all the relatives who came to the bridge building afternoon and making it such a success.
